Opened in 2018, Cohen & Gresser’s London office provides legal services to clients around the world. The London office represents investment managers, financial institutions, global companies, family offices, and individuals in a variety of disciplines. On the transactional side, we represent clients in all aspects of investing and investments, restructurings, and divestitures. The UK commercial litigation team advises on a wide range of cross-border disputes, and are well-versed in funds, financial services, and insurance litigation in a number of jurisdictions, including offshore jurisdictions. Our UK white collar defense and investigations team represents entities and individuals in complex economic crime, investigations, and regulatory matters. The London office works closely across practices with colleagues in New York and Paris, providing seamless support on sophisticated cross-border matters.

Partner Daniel H Mathias leads the London office and has extensive experience advising private equity firms, owners, family offices, growth equity funds, and other alternative asset managers on their investments and divestments. Having worked in London, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and Hong Kong, Daniel has significant international transactional experience and often works with U.S.-based clients on domestic and major cross-border transactions.

The private funding round represents the largest aerospace and defense capital raise in the world in 2021 and the second-largest private capital raise of all time in the aerospace and defense sector. Global Investigations Review (GIR) has again nominated Cohen & Gresser for its Most Important Court Case of the Year award for the major victory at the UK Supreme Court achieved by C&G’s Richard Kovalevsky QC on behalf of KBR Inc. On February 5, 2021, the UK Supreme Court handed down a landmark judgment that delivered a decisive victory to KBR Inc. and agreed to the arguments presented by Richard and the rest of the KBR legal team. In its decision, the Supreme Court held that the SFO could not compel a foreign company to produce documents held abroad under Section 2(3) of the Criminal Justice Act of 1987.

As head of Criminal Defense for the London office, Richard’s hire will bolster Cohen & Gresser’s highly-regarded White Collar Defense practice and strengthen the firm’s ability to provide clients with sophisticated and strategic guidance on the most complex government and internal investigations.

Cohen & Gresser announces the expansion of its White Collar Defense & Regulation and Litigation & Arbitration groups in London with the addition of Thomas W Shortland. Tom advises on a broad range of domestic and cross-border disputes including civil, regulatory, and criminal matters. Prior to joining C&G, Tom practiced at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton where, between 2015 and 2016, he was seconded to the Bribery & Corruption Division of the UK’s Serious Fraud Office as an Investigative Lawyer.

Cohen & Gresser announces the appointment of Pere Puig Folch as Consulting Director of Data Strategy. Pere will work from the firm’s London office and support Cohen & Gresser’s operations worldwide.

Pere will oversee the expansion of Cohen & Gresser’s technology capabilities and the introduction of advanced machine learning techniques for use in Big Data litigation and investigations. He will work closely with Thomas Powers, the firm’s e-Discovery Manager based in New York. Together, they will collaborate with external IT and data vendors to design innovative case-work data strategies.
