Jeffrey M. Movit is a partner in Cohen & Gresser’s Litigation & Arbitration group in New York. He represents clients in complex commercial disputes, with a focus on entertainment, intellectual property, and corporate governance matters.
Jeffrey has extensive experience litigating high-stakes cases in federal and state courts and in arbitration. His entertainment litigation practice includes representing record labels, music publishers, managers, artists, and songwriters in disputes involving copyright, trademark, defamation, audits, and related claims. He has successfully litigated numerous precedent-setting copyright cases concerning well-known musical works.
In addition, Jeffrey advises and represents companies, boards, and individual stakeholders in corporate and securities disputes, including claims involving breaches of fiduciary duty and direct and derivative actions.
Jeffrey is recognized for his practical and strategic approach to dispute resolution. He has been named by Billboard as a “Top Music Lawyer” and selected to Super Lawyers since 2022. The New York Post has recognized Jeffrey as the “lawyer to the stars.”
Prior to joining Cohen & Gresser, Jeffrey was head of litigation at ChaudhryLaw PLLC.

Representative Litigation Matters
Represented a legendary music industry executive in a lawsuit asserting tort claims against him; on appeal, Jeffrey obtained the dismissal of all claims against the executive.*
Represented a prominent recording artist and a major record label in White v. UMG Recordings, Inc., obtaining summary judgment dismissal of claims under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (S.D.N.Y. 2024).*
Represented the managing members of a limited liability company in a dispute with another member alleging improper dilution of ownership interest, securing dismissal of all claims.*
Represented a major talent management company in a breach-of-contract arbitration, obtaining a damages award of $1,275,744.43, securing the client’s right to ongoing commissions in perpetuity, and defeating all counterclaims.*
Represented defendants at trial and on appeal in the copyright infringement action entitled Gray v. Hudson, securing judgment in favor of the clients and affirmance by the Ninth Circuit.*
Represented defendants at trial and on appeal in the copyright infringement action entitled Estate of Smith v. Cash Money Records, Inc., obtaining dismissal affirmed by the Second Circuit based on a finding of fair use.*
Represented defendants in the copyright infringement action Loomis v. Cornish, successfully arguing before the Ninth Circuit that the plaintiff failed to establish access.*
Represented defendants in Jay Brian Ballard v. Mary J. Blige, securing dismissal of copyright claims following deposition testimony undermining the plaintiff’s expert.*

Jeffrey represents record labels, music publishers, managers, artists, and songwriters in high-stakes disputes involving copyright, trademark, defamation, audits, and related claims. He has litigated numerous significant copyright cases involving well-known musical works and has substantial experience in both federal and state courts, as well as in arbitration. In addition to his entertainment practice, Jeffrey advises companies, boards, and individual stakeholders in corporate and securities disputes, including matters involving fiduciary duties and shareholder claims.
